Sashiko 101

Welcome to the enchanting world of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that originated in the 17th century. Initially developed for mending and reinforcing fabric, Sashiko is celebrated for its practicality and simple yet striking geometric patterns.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will create a small item with Sashiko. Through this process, you will learn to authentically draw traditional Sashiko patterns and master the art of Sashiko Unshin (運針) — the needle movement renowned for its efficiency and meditative effects. Additionally, you'll understand the meanings behind each motif and discover techniques to sew patterns that are visually appealing from both the front and back sides. Eventually, you will be prepared to sew more complicated Sashiko patterns on your own and gain an understanding of visible mending.

Join us for this tranquil experience under the guidance of Sashiko artisan Xiaoxiao!

Some first-year machine knitting class projects! A cozy bonnet and cache-cou in fine merino, plus tabi socks in raw silk — soft, textured, and full of learning.

One of my first-year textile school projects was to weave the perfect plain weave, where the warp and weft interlace evenly to form a grid of perfect squares. After we finished weaving, our teacher asked us to dye the fabric to “desacralize&rdq

Hosting at my own space means I can’t accommodate as many people as in the beginner workshops, but it’s always cozy, relaxed, and full of great energy.

Mending the crotch area of pants can be challenging, especially with thick denim fabric. For this pair of non-stretch jeans, I chose 100% cotton backing fabric to ensure comfort against the skin and doubled the inner patch beneath the hole to enhance
✨ I felt so lucky to teach visible mending to a group of 9- to 14-year-olds this Sunday—huge thanks to Dorval Library for the invitation! These kids were AMAZING! 🧵✂️ For two whole hours, they were fully present every second, trusted their han
I felt so honored to be invited by York University’s Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change @yorkueuc to share sashiko and visible mending with the students and staff there. It was such a joy to connect through stitching, exchange stories, a
